Abstract
The United States healthcare system is characterized by structural complexity, multi-stakeholder governance, and diverse financing mechanisms. Health insurance companies occupy a central position within this system, acting as intermediaries between patients, healthcare providers, and regulatory authorities. This article examines the role of insurance companies in shaping access to healthcare, cost structures, service quality, and innovation. Drawing on historical analysis, regulatory review, and contemporary policy debates, the study explores the functions, challenges, and future trajectories of health insurance in the U.S. healthcare system. Particular attention is given to regulatory frameworks, administrative efficiency, equity concerns, and the growing role of digital technologies.
